520 8 ^aAnnotation^bThis book presents the state of art in thefield of microbial zoonoses and sapronoses. It could beused as a textbook or manual in microbiology and medicalzoology for students of human and veterinary medicine, including Ph.D. students, and for biomedicine scientistsand medical practitioners and specialists aswell.Surprisingly, severe zoonoses and sapronoses stillappear that are either entirely new (e.g., SARS), newlyrecognized (Lyme borreliosis), resurging (West Nile feverin Europe), increasing in incidence (campylobacterosis),spatially expanding (West Nile fever in the Americas),with a changing range of hosts and/or vectors, withchanging clinical manifestations or acquiring antibioticresistance. The collective term for those diseases is(re)emerging infections, and most of them representzoonoses and sapronoses (the rest are anthroponoses). Thenumber of known zoonotic and sapronotic pathogens ofhumans is continually growing ∠over 800today. In the introductory part, short characteristics aregiven of infectious and epidemic process, including therole of environmental factors, possibilities of theirepidemiological surveillance, and control. Much emphasisis laid on ecological aspects of these diseases(haematophagous vectors and their life history; vertebratehosts of zoonoses; habitats of the agents and theirgeographic distribution; natural focality of diseases).Particular zoonoses and sapronoses are then characterizedin the following brief paragraphs: source of humaninfection; animal disease; transmission mode; humandisease; epidemiology; diagnostics; therapy; geographicdistribution |
